GT-R’S REBUILD TO SET UP HOBSON’S GT TROPHY TITLE ATTACK
Following an outright race-winning performance at the most recent round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS held at The Bend Motorsport Park, the GT Trophy Class Nissan GT-R GT3 of Brett Hobson is receiving a birthday.
Run out of the Garth Walden led GWR Australia workshop in Sydney, Hobson’s GT-R GT3 is receiving a birthday during the category’s extended break to set-up an attack on the GT Trophy title at Sandown in September.
Spurred on by strong results throughout the season, the GT-R rebuild will ensure a drama-free conclusion to the season, which doesn’t end at Sandown as two endurance events at The Bend and Bathurst conclude the inaugural Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS season.
Just 25-points separate Hobson and GT Trophy leader Brad Schumacher heading to the final round at Sandown with 50 on offer across the pair of one-hour events.
“The car’s is good condition now, but it is actually getting a pretty big birthday as we speak,” said Hobson.
“It will be rocking out at the next round with basically zero kilometres on everything, bar the motor, which is good and where we need to be.”
Reliability problems have interrupted Hobson’s first full-season GT campaign due to the GT-R GT3s limited running after completing just three Bathurst 12 Hour campaigns and a change of teams, while under Hobson’s ownership.
But he still achieved what many competitors set out to do, an outright Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS race victory at The Bend Motorsport Park, the first for the Nissan GT-R GT3 in Australia since its success in the 2015 Bathurst 12 Hour.
“It was very cool,” he remarked.
“I think we thought we had it in us to run at the front and win races in our class, but I don’t think outright. Rain is a bit of a game changer; you still don’t know where you’re going to end up on the best of days.
“The car and myself go really, really well together.
“I’m just very comfortable in it.”
Hobson is enjoying his time in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS field and has committed to a return in 2022, with the possibility of an updated model to take on GT Trophy.
“I’m happy doing what I’m doing, I’m happy in the position that we’re in and it’s where I want to be again next year,” he said.
“I’ve got a really good crew in GWR Australia, we gel really good and I’m starting to get a bit of confidence in the car. I’m just happy to drive it.
“I’m having fun with racing at the moment.
“Then we have some things in the pipeline to possibly retire that car and hop into a newer one, but I’ll be carrying the GT-R flag for a while yet!”
