ASM commits to two-car Alfa team for 2021

Ashley Seward Motorsport has committed to a two-car Alfa Romeo TCR program for 2021.

The experienced Melbourne-based team will enter two cars in the turbo-charged touring car class, with young 16-year-old rookie Jay Hanson to be joined by a yet-to-be-named driver.

Team boss Ash Seward says that he is in close contact with up to four drivers who are showing genuine interest in the competitive Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce package that has stunned the WTCR ranks in 2020.

“We’re going hard at it, and we are committed to entering two cars this year,” said Seward.

“We’re taking the second car to Tassie for the first round, but we are still working out who is going to drive it.

“The TCR business model is to have two cars minimum. We have four drivers on the shortlist, but there’s a few other teams out there with spare cars too. So there’s some competition for those drivers, but we are confident that we will be able to get someone in our car.”

The Alfa Romeo was a standout in the 2019 TCR Australia Series at the hands of Dylan O’Keeffe, who took two pole positions and four race wins on his way to fourth outright in the inaugural series.

Development of the Giulietta Veloce has not stopped either, with new international Alfa driver Jean-Karl Vernay proving super fast in the WTCR ranks.

ASM itself has been testing regularly with Hanson at the wheel, and Seward is confident the little Italian rocket will be a force in 2021.

“The Alfa, in the hands of Dylan, proved last year that it’s ultra competitive,” he said.

“You only have to look at World TCR to see that it has been a very competitive package compared to some of the big manufacturers.

“Jay has been coming along very nicely during our build up to this year. If we get an experienced, fast team-mate for him, I feel that we are sitting in a really good spot.”

Besides its TCR program, ASM also enters cars in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia and the Porsche Michelin Sprint Cup.

The opening round of the TCR Australia Series will be held at Symmons Plains Raceway on January 24-26, alongside S5000, Touring Car Masters and Trans Am.
