COMEBACK KID GARWOOD TO RETURN TO TCM AT WINTON

ADAM GARWOOD will make a return to the Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters series linking with Whiteline Racing for the next two rounds of the championship at Winton and Queensland Raceway.

A three-time TCM race winner the experienced Tasmanian will drive the No. 85 1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS for Whiteline Racing in something of a comeback to the category.

Garwood raced a Holden Torana – and sometimes a Ford Capri – successfully in TCM for several seasons winning his first race at the Adelaide 500 in 2016 having made his debut a year prior.  

As well as his race wins Garwood has five other podium finishes to his credit won the 2016 ProSports class title and finished third in Pro-Am a year later – and fifth overall in the TCM championship.

He has subsequently raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup Sports GT and even on dirt-track speedways before last week making his debut in the iconic Targa Tasmania tarmac rally in his home

“I am really looking forward to returning to the series after running in Carrera Cup last year†he said.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the full amount of backing to run a full season again so I’ve took a step back in my racing for the year to see what we can work out for next year and also try and bring the fun back into my racing so I’m very happy to be able to work out a deal with Bob and Sharon to run the Whiteline Racing Camaro.

“I believe I’ve developed more as a driver since last time I ran at Bathurst in TCM so I’m keen to see where I end up at Winton.

“We wanted to bring the Capri back but it’s still needs a bit of work to be 100% eligible to run the series as well as the offer from Bob and Sharon was too good to pass up on.â€Â

Both driver and car are proven winners in Touring Car Masters; the later-model Camaro in the Whiteline stable also a three-time race winner in the hands of Mark King – it’s last win coming in June last year at Hidden Valley.

The team is currently enjoying a strong season with the sister 1969 Camaro driven by Adam Bressington currently sitting second in the championship having finished second in both rounds contested to this point in 2019.

“I definitely hope to be a front runner at Winton even though the track probably is suited towards to lighter five-litre cars†Garwood added.

“Both Adam Bressington and Mark King have showed the potential of the cars – as well as racing against the cars a couple of years ago I know what they’re capable of so I’m really excited to see what we can do in it.â€Â

Garwood’s first non-reverse grid race win came at Winton making the technical 3.2km circuit North of Melbourne something of a happy hunting ground.

“I have had good success at both tracks getting my first outright (non-trophy race) victory at Winton and I also have had strong results at QR.

“The Camaro will be strong at both tracks but overall I’m just excited to get back on track with the TCM cars as they attract the crowd and produce some great racing.â€Â

The third round of the Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters series will see the category return to Winton for the ninth time for the now traditional late-May appearance at the circuit.

Whiteline Racing enjoyed a successful weekend at the venue last year with Adam Bressington powering to victory over Ryan Hansford and Steven Johnson in Race 9 of the 2018 season.

Races 7 8 and 9 of the 2019 season plus the regular Dometic Trophy Race will be contested at the Truck Assist Winton SuperSprint between May 24-26.

Qualifying and all four races will be shown live on FOX Sports 506 and Kayo Sports.
